Emergency contraception or emergency birth control is a pill that you must take no later than 120 hours (5 days) after having unprotected sex. The sooner it is taken the more effective it is in preventing pregnancy. Ideally, it should be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex.
Emergency birth control is NOT medication abortion and cannot interrupt an established pregnancy. It works by preventing an egg from being released or by preventing it from being fertilized by sperm.
