Colposcopy is a procedure used to examine the cervix, walls of the vagina, and vulva (external genitalia) through a colposcope to find any abnormal cells. This procedure can also be used to diagnose genital warts or cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix). A colposcope is a magnifying device used to enlarge the view of the tissue of the cervix or vagina. If a provider finds any abnormal cells, they may biopsy the area by collecting a tissue sample to be sent for lab testing. Typically, this procedure is performed after a cervical cancer screening results in abnormal changes found in cervical tissue.
Typically, this procedure is performed if a patient has an abnormal pap smear or colposcopy, but it can also be used to diagnose and treat polyps or genital warts. This procedure is used to test and treat medication conditions by removing abnormal or precancerous cells from the cervix. LEEP uses a small electrically heated wire loop that removes abnormal cells in cervical tissue. The removed tissue is sent to a lab for further evaluation or testing.
