Intern Program

College & University Student Internship:
Overview

As part of our Young Women’s Leadership Project, the Feminist Women’s Health Center offers one of the most unique leadership building opportunities for college and university level students. Our program gives students an opportunity to experience the realities of working in a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring reproductive health, rights, and justice for all women. Interns come from across the U.S. as well as in Georgia. Most interns are college students (undergraduate and graduate); however, enrollment in college is not required.

Application Deadlines and Program Time Frames

  • Summer 2010 Session I Internship Applications are due by Friday, April 16.
  • Summer 2010 Session I Begins Tuesday, May 18 and ends Friday, July 23.
  • Summer 2010 Session II Internship Applications are due by Friday, May 14.
  • Summer 2010 Session II Begins Tuesday, June 15 and ends Friday, August 27.
  • For 2010 Clinical and Counseling Internship Applications, please follow the application deadlines until further notice on this website. Dates for the duration of the internships will be worked out individually with applicants.
  • Fall 2010 Internship Applications are due by Monday, August 17.
  • Fall 2010 Internships are scheduled between September and December.
  • Winter/Spring Internship 2011 Applications are due by Friday, December 10.

Interns will . . .

  • gain a basic understanding of Feminist Women’s Health Center’s mission, vision, and philosophy;
  • learn the different components of Feminist Women’s Health Center, including but not limited to, clinical services, community outreach, volunteer programs, fundraising, and political advocacy;
  • acquire the knowledge and skills that are essential components of your internships;
  • experience a varying degree of cross training between and among other interns;
  • develop relationships with other interns that may last after the internship has been completed; and
  • see the importance of your own work at the Feminist Women’s Health Center and be a valued part of our staffing and volunteer team.

Required Hours

For all internships generally, except for clinical and counseling internships:

  • Fall and Winter/Spring internships are approximately 8-12 hours/week to complete a total of 150 hours.
  • Summer internships (Session I & II) are 20 hours for 10 weeks to complete a total of 200 hours.
  • Clinical and Counseling Internships have a 4 to 5 month term, and required hours on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Qualifications

  • Self-motivated, organized and able to work well with volunteers and employees.
  • Strong commitment to reproductive freedom, including the right to choose abortion.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Other skills and abilities are identified on the Internship Options list.

Every intern will have one main project. Other requirements include participation in our leadership skills training program, cross-training in volunteer recruitment, community outreach, political advocacy, fundraising, and team-building with other interns.

It is helpful for both the prospective intern and the Feminist Women’s Health Center to have a preliminary discussion in order to match applicants’ interests with our program needs.

Applying for an Internship

In order to apply for an internship, you will need to complete an Internship Application to send along with the following other materials:

  1. Cover Letter
  2. Resume
  3. A Recommendation Letter
  4. Transcript Copy, and
  5. Writing Sample of 1 to 2 pages answering the questions: “Why is being an intern at the Feminist Women’s Health Center important to you?”

Note: Please send in your application as soon as possible. Often there are multiple applicants for the same internship, which means that we frequently have multiple candidates for the same internship post. Please be advised that, in some cases, we will accept candidates for a specific internship in advance of an internship deadline.

High School Student Internships

High school internships are also offered at the Feminist Women’s Health Center for those students older than 16 years old. Please click on the above link for further information on the program options and application process. Through the Lifting Latina Voices Initiative, there is a special high school internship program linked to mentors from the Latina Leadership Committee.
